The Real Self

June 11th, 2007 by Pete

Her mind pondered on gravely and intently, thinking to herself, “Well – there you are again, you curious creature!”

It was indeed a fierce mania of Mary’s to stare into her own eyes at the looking-glass. She did it as a rule more angrily than with any other feeling; and, when she did it, she always thought of the self that looked back at her there as something quite different from the self she was conscious of really being.

Her real self didn’t seem to have eyes or nose, or mouth! Her real self seemed compounded out of pure ether and totally independent of bodily form.

I Woke Up Laughing

June 11th, 2007 by Pete

I had a dream last night.
We were all inside the sacred temple
looking for the entrance.

Who would have thought that such insanity exists in heaven?
At first light I woke up
laughing.

The joke of it all is that you are looking from your true nature right now without knowing it.
If you would stop being fascinated with the contents of your mind,
you would experience what I am saying.
Feel your way into what I am saying rather than thinking about it.

Enlightenment is the restoration of cosmic humor.

Stay Alert!

June 11th, 2007 by Pete

One early morning a vampire bat flapped wearily in from his nightly prowl with his face covered in fresh blood.

Grabbing the nearest spot where he could hang from the roof of the cave, he prepared to sleep, but the other bats began hassling him about where the blood had come from.

Several times he told them to get lost and let him get some sleep but they persisted until he finally gave in.

“OK, follow me.” he said and headed out of the cave followed by hundreds of excited bats.

Down through a valley they went, across a river and into a huge forest.

Finally the bat slowed down and all the others milled around him, their tongues hanging out.

“See that large oak tree over there?” he said.

“Yes, yes,” they all screamed in a frenzy.

“Well, good for you,” said the first bat, “‘cos I didn’t!”

Wearing Yourself Out!

June 7th, 2007 by Pete

When inquiry is authentic, it brings you into the experience of here and now, bringing you to the full depth of it, pulling you into it. The question pulls you back into the mystery of your experience. “What am I?” takes you right back into the mystery.

If your mind is honest, it knows it doesn’t have the answer. You ask, “What am I?” and instantly, there is silence. Your mind doesn’t know. And when it doesn’t know, there is an experience right here, right now, that is alive. You bump into nothingness inside—that no-thing, that absolute nothingness which your mind can’t know.

The answer does not come in the form of a description or phrase; it is a direct experience. And this experience, your livingness, always transcends any words or intellectual answer.

In fact, the truth of your being is eternally transcending itself. As soon as it projects itself out as something, even as a profound insight, it has already transcended it.

So eventually the inquiry wears itself out. You wear yourself out. You wear your ego self out. You wear your spiritual self out. You wear it all out. You’ve inquired yourself out of this whole thing, and you’re disappearing faster than you can put yourself together.

As Nisargadatta Maharaj said so brilliantly and beautifully, “The ultimate understanding is that there is no ultimate understanding.”

When it’s in the head, it’s an impressive piece of understanding; when it’s in the heart, as the Buddha said, it’s extinguished. You find a living experience of being, empty of content, empty of you.

This is where spiritual awakening begins. This is the living answer of authentic inquiry.

No Strings Attached

June 4th, 2007 by Pete

Until now only those seekers who had stepped away from the collective and traveled their own solitary path have had access to the consciousness of unity.

The door to this quality of consciousness was only opened to individuals who had passed certain trials, who had faced the darkness of their shadow and purified their lower nature.

The wonder of the present transition is that the collective is being given access to this next step in consciousness without having to make this laborious and painful inner journey. Now the doorway to unity stands open to the whole of humanity.

The work of the mystic is to make human beings aware of this possibility, to stand within the doorway of unity and welcome the collective inside.

Most people do not even know that a consciousness beyond self-oriented individuality exists. They do not see the light that is streaming through, the wholeness that is beckoning them.

The patterns of our collective conditioning have created a veil which blocks our awareness of what is being given. If we do not know what is being offered, we will not be able to fully participate in its magic, in its new way of being. We will not step through the doorway.

Even many spiritual seekers still think in terms of effort, of trials and tests. But there is no longer any key needed to open the door. It cannot now be closed.

This change is so simple and fundamental it is easy to overlook. It is not a problem to be solved. There is nothing to be learned, no steps to success. Something is being given freely, with no strings attached. All that is required is for each of us to say “yes.”

Here At The Center

June 4th, 2007 by Pete

Here at the center, one unchanging Identity exists: Spirit, Consciousness, Awareness. This Identity is The-One-being-I, being this consciousness of existence right here and now.

Here it is recognized that all the action going on, including the situation you are presently concerned about, is the action of God perceiving Himself. Here it is seen that all substance is Spirit being Spirit, and no other Identity actually exists to misperceive or be misperceived. The Identity who is present “belongs” to God.

Here at the Center of Being — simple Awareness — there is no need to judge whatever appears in that awareness. Turmoil may arise from time to time, but in the place of turmoil comes a simple, quiet resting in the Holy of Holies, the Secret Place of the Most High.

Then, from this position of felt quiet, as Tranquillity Itself, we look at our situation without having to cringe because of it, and we find ourselves knowing precisely what should be done, or not done, about it.

Trust

June 4th, 2007 by Pete

It’s like so many other things in life to which you must say no or yes.
So you take your car to the new mechanic.
Sometimes the best thing to do is trust.
The package left with the disreputable-looking clerk,
the check gulped by the night deposit,
the envelope passed by dozens of strangers -
all show up at their intended destinations.
The theft that could have happened doesn’t.
Wind finally gets where it was going through the snowy trees,
and the river, even when frozen, arrives at the right place.
And sometimes you sense how faithfully your life is delivered,
even though you can’t read the address.

Prayer For a Quiet Mind

June 4th, 2007 by Pete

May I be aware of my thoughts — that they may be as words written on water which vanish even as they are written.
If I cannot quiet my mind, let my thoughts be of the Eternal Bliss, free of sorrow, free of doubt.
Let the veil which is the mind be lifted that I may be the True Self.

Recognition?

June 4th, 2007 by Pete

Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed, they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc.The next morning, they went to the beach, dressed in their “tourist” garb. They were sitting on beach chairs, and enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery when a great-looking blonde in a bikini came walking straight towards them. They couldn’t help but stare. As the blonde passed them, she smiled, nodded and said, “Good morning, Father,” “Good morning, Father,” addressing each of them individually, then passed on by.

They were both stunned. “How in the world did she know we’re priests?” they asked each other.

The next day, they went back to the store, bought even more outrageous outfits. Once again the two priests in disguise settled on the beach in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine, etc. After a while, the same gorgeous blonde, taking her sweet time, came walking toward them and greeted them individually with “Good morning, Father,” and started to walk away.

One of the priests couldn’t stand it any longer and said, “Just a minute young lady.” “Yes?” she replied. “We are priests, and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world did you know we are priests?”

Replied the young woman: “Father, it’s me, Sister Angela.”
