Quote of the Moment

May 14th, 2008 by Pete

Planets, solar systems and nebulae appear and disappear; energy is transformed into matter and matter is transformed into energy, but there is something which does not appear and disappear but is eternal and that is the great cosmic ocean of Consciousness, from and into which come all forms of energy. This is what modern science tells us, confirming the intuitive insight of the mystic.

The Light of Life

April 24th, 2008 by Pete

Anyone interested in spirituality or religion will recognize that light, as an illuminating and life-giving energy, has been a much-used metaphor for the divine since time immemorial. Pure light has thus been equated with the light of truth, the light of God, the light of Consciousness, the light of Buddha, the Christ-light or the cosmic light, depending upon where one was born and what one was taught.

Nearly all cultures, peoples, and religious groups through the ages have talked about the phenomenon of light in the context of the spiritual or mystical experience. Spiritually inclined individuals have spoken of being called to the light, of being filled with light, of being guided by the light, and of dissolving in an ocean of light etc. Those who claim to have seen visions of holy beings typically report that they were surrounded by a radiant luminescence.

After Prince Siddhartha Gautama realized his Buddhahood, he taught that all beings are imbued with a spark of inner divine light. In describing the original Buddha-nature, Buddhists use such phrases as innate luminosity, primordial radiance, the unobscured clear natural mind, and the clear light of reality.

An Inner Revolution

March 5th, 2008 by Pete

The enlightenment I speak of is not simply a realization, not simply the discovery of one’s true nature. This is just the beginning — the point of entry into an inner revolution. Realization does not guarantee this revolution, it simply makes it possible.

What is this revolution? To begin with, revolution is not static; it is alive, ongoing. Realization of the ultimate reality is a fact. Revolution is the continuous ongoing birth of intelligence. This intelligence restructures your entire being. This intelligence cuts the mind free of itself, of its old structures which are rooted become free of the old structures of human consciousness, then one is still in a prison, the prison of humanity’s consciousness.

This revolution is the awakening of an intelligence which alone has the ability to uproot all of the old structures of one’s consciousness. Unless these structures are uprooted, there will be no creative thought or action or response. Unless there is an inner revolution, nothing new and fresh can flower. Only the old will flower in the absence of this revolution. But our potential lies beyond the known, beyond the structures of the past, beyond anything that humanity has established.

One must be willing to stand alone — in the unknown, with no reference to authority or the past or any of one’s conditioning. One must stand where no one has stood before in complete nakedness, innocence, and humility.

When Inspiration Comes

March 5th, 2008 by Pete

To realize that we are one with the Creator, as Beethoven did, is a wonderful and awe-inspiring experience. Very few human beings ever come into that realization and that is why there are so few great composers or creative geniuses in any line of human endeavor. I always
contemplate all this before commencing to compose.

This is the first step. When I feel the urge I begin by appealing directly to my Maker and I first ask Him the three most important questions pertaining to our life here in this world — whence, wherefore, whither? I immediately feel vibrations that thrill my whole being. These are the spirit
illuminating the soul-power within, and in this exalted state, I see clearly what is obscure in my ordinary moods; then I feel capable of drawing inspiration from above, as Beethoven did.

Above all, I realize at such moments the tremendous significance of Jesus’ supreme revelation, “I and my Father are One”. Those vibrations assume the forms of distinct mental images, after I have formulated my desire and resolve in regard to what I want — namely, to be inspired so that I can compose something that will uplift and benefit humanity — something of permanent value.

Straight away the ideas flow in upon me, directly from God, and not only do I see distinct themes in my mind’s eye, but they are clothed in the right forms, harmonies and orchestration. Measure by measure, the finished product is revealed to me when I am in those rare, inspired moods, as they were to Tartini when he composed his greatest work — the Devil’s Trill Sonata.

I have to be in a semi-trance condition to get such results — a condition when the conscious mind is in temporary abeyance and the subconscious is in control, for it is through the subconscious mind, which is a part of Omnipotence, that the inspiration comes. I have to be
careful, however, not to lose consciousness, otherwise, the ideas fade away.

Truth in Disguise

February 25th, 2008 by Pete

Once upon a time, Truth had a human form. He had a passion to set people free from their wrong ideas so they could live better, and in the end, happier lives but he was thwarted in his desire.

All of you will be familiar with the phrase, ‘The naked truth’ and this stems from the fact that it was in the nature of Truth not to wear any covering. Although Truth in his nakedness was not uncomely and was even thought to be beautiful in an awesome kind of way, whenever he appeared to people in this unclothed fashion, they were surprised, shocked and often offended. They fled from Truth in the street, shunned his company and never invited him into their homes.

This made Truth feel frustrated and miserable for he longed for the company of ordinary people and wanted only to do them good. In the same town, lived Fiction who, at that time, also had a human form. Fiction owned his own theatre and put on plays every night for the
people. Truth noticed that, unlike himself, Fiction was very popular and eagerly sought out by the people who enjoyed his theatrical productions.

Fiction happened to meet Truth one day and, noticing how sad Truth looked, asked how he was getting on. Wiping away a tear, Truth told him that he was always being avoided by people and how unhappy this made him. “I have so much of value to tell them,” he said
despondently, “But they won’t even let me speak to them.” Fiction said, “Perhaps I can help you. Meet me at my theatre in an hour.”

When Truth arrived at the theatre, Fiction showed him a vast wardrobe of bright attractive costumes which he used for his productions. “There are far more here than I will ever need,” Fiction said, “Dress yourself up in some of these clothes, call yourself by another name and go out into the world with your wisdom and see how you get on.”

After a moments hesitation, Truth accepted the advice. He dressed himself from Fiction’s wardrobe and, taking the new name of Parable, he went out into the world and immediately found he was accepted and appreciated by almost everyone. From that time on,
wherever Parable has gone, he has been welcomed not only into the homes of men and women, but into their minds and into their hearts.

Tell It Slant

February 12th, 2008 by Pete

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant—
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind—

Progressive Vs. Direct Paths

February 5th, 2008 by Pete

While the identification of Consciousness with the individual is strong the ‘progressive path’ is the path of choice because time and ‘me’ are the foundation of the experience of such aspirants. Aspirants involved with the progressive path often experience moments of presence but fail to understand Presence’s impersonal quality. They invariably refer to those high states as ‘mine’ and they say ‘they are not permanent yet’.

This lack of understanding then manifests as seeking a future attainment and an investment in methods and practices, that is, in mind activity that supplants other types of mind activity which are defined as undesirable. This is the path that says: ‘if you do this long enough you will get that’. It is the path designed to keep you on the path ad infinitum.

What could be called the ‘direct path’ is the path of a single pointer to the timeless and ever present reality of our Being. This pointer can come in any of a number of unexpected ways. It may come through written words, it may come through the silent presence of a sage, it may eventually be realized as coming from the Consciousness that we are Itself — and here the path ends. This is the path that says: ‘you already are what you are seeking — all there is is Consciousness’.

The truth is that there is no path at all. It is all conceptual — a dream made of the same substance, and put in effect by the same power, as the dreams in sleep. All there is is pure Being or Consciousness appearing as everything including the individual seeking the resolution to the question of existence.

This

January 29th, 2008 by Pete

This is timeless, deathless, eternal.

This is without equal, this is never-to-be-repeated, this is utterly unique and totally new, in each and every moment, although there are no ‘moments’ at all.

This is empty of all qualities, even the quality of being empty of all qualities. And yet, this is totality full, pregnant with infinite possibility, possibility that overflows again and again into a world.

This is peace, but it is a volcanic peace, a peace which does not deny noise but embraces it fully, a peace which does not rest, an ecstatic peace that throws itself out of itself now, now and now.

This is completely unknowable, and yet it is filled with the knowledge of things, filled with an apparent world ‘out there’, in its infinite guises.

This is something that cannot be spoken of by anyone, and yet words are thrown out, day after day after day.

This is not of this world, and yet it is nothing but this world.

This is completely extraordinary, and yet it is as simple and as obvious as the sound of the rain splish-splashing on your rooftop.

What The Windows Teach

December 8th, 2007 by Pete

If ever you’re fortunate enough to stand in a great cathedral like Chartres in Paris, or some other elsewhere, and gaze up at the gorgeous stained-glass windows depicting so many stories of saints and sinners, the great symbolism behind it all that the architect, artisans and mystics intended is simply this – through all the myriad figures and representations of nature, the one Light shines through and enlightens them all. Without that Light, they could not be seen nor could their translucent colours enthral us.

One Light shines through the many windows and the many differently shaped pieces of glass in each window section. It is the one Light making many appearances – the so-called saints and sinners stand out in every imaginable shade and hue.

These magnificent windows are trying to tell us – it’s all God! Not God and them or God and us – there is only God, the Light that is the substance of all. The same Light shines in and through everything that comes into being – there is nothing else!

The Christ-Light is What we really are – the Light of the world, as the Master always was, is now and ever shall be – beyond birth and death, beyond time and space. Let us then stand in awe and with the eyes of God, gaze the gaze of eternity – seeing God everywhere and in everything.

Modern Alchemy

November 26th, 2007 by Pete

Hi Juvenal,You asked: “have you ever read about alchemy?”

Yes, I have and now understand that most, if not all, of the great alchemists of past centuries were actually investigators, practitioners and teachers of non-dual philosophy. In earlier times, in religion-dominated societies, it was often quite dangerous for individuals to openly explore non-dual spiritual teaching, so they were forced to do this under the guise of searching for the so-called philosopher’s stone that would turn base-metal into gold. They knew this stated pursuit would be tolerated and even approved by wealth-seeking ecclesiastics and local authorities who would not then question their researches, collecting of books and travels to other enlightened masters etc. Of course, they had to set up laboratories and ‘experiments’ to keep up appearances, but their real passion was to discover the truth of man’s essential nature and pass their insights on to other earnest seekers.

Naturally, there were many thousands of lesser souls who heard about the lab equipment and thought there was a real chance that someone could create gold out of sheet lead, got in on the act and wasted the rest of their lives on a futile search for riches. The imitators, like the ecclesiastics, never guessed what the real alchemists were up to.

To the true alchemists, the so-called philosopher’s stone was a symbol of the transmuting power of truth when it is known, understood and practiced. They, as we have seen, were not in quest of a magical stone, but That which transmutes the ordinary into the extraordinary, the mundane into the divine, discord into harmony and mind-made suffering into peace. What they yearned for was found, not by some feat of wizardry or arduous attainment, but by simply seeing that all is Consciousness (or God) and that everything that appears is actually an expression of the divine Source! After this direct inseeing and consequent shift in their understanding of what constituted reality, they had to use symbolic language and codes to record their discovery.

One of the ways they might do this was to write an encrypted book or engrave a tablet that purported to be about turning base-metal into gold, but was really about the ultimate understanding or ‘enlightenment’. They had to be extremely secretive, for if their real purpose was found out, they know they could be put to death for being a heretic or a blasphemer. To the society of their day, the enlightened alchemists were content to be regarded as harmless cranks and dubious scholars.

Awakened or ‘enlightened’ people have never enlightened everyone that came in contact with them. We see this most obviously in the cases of Jesus and Gautama (Buddha). In fact, only a small number of those who encountered these great souls seemed to truly understand their teaching. (many are called but few are chosen.)

Why was this? Well, Juvenal, it’s pretty much the same today. Just as the heat of an oven will soften butter, but harden clay, so conscious awareness or the awareness of truth in a seer will attract those who are ready to awaken and repel those who are not. Those who are fully conscious will help those who are just beginning to wake up spiritually to become more and more conscious, while their effect on spiritually unconscious people will be to drive them further into unconsciousness and mind-conditioned behavior. You will probably be experiencing this to some degree or other right now among your associates in Iraq.

The good news, Juvenal, is that there are still ‘enlightened’ teachers in our midst today, only they are no longer disguised as alchemists, but as fairly ordinary people who wear blue-jeans, drive cars and use computers etc. Through their low-profile work, figuratively speaking, base stuff is being transmuted into gold in the lives of many who stumble upon them and recognize what they have to offer. But this only happens, it seems, when what is Deep in the teacher can reach what is Deep in the seeker. Then “Deep calls unto Deep”, and with the answering, there begins a steady transformation on every level of the respondent’s life-experience. A golden moment indeed!
