History of Mysticism: The Unchanging Testament
by Swami Abhayananda.

History of Mysticism is a course in spirituality like no other. It presents, in an historical context, the lives and teachings of over 40 famous mystics or seers from both Eastern and Western religious traditions. It reveals the antiquity and endurance of the Great Mystical Tradition and the unity underlying the diversity of its manifold expressions.

History of Mysticism has been adopted as a textbook in a number of undergraduate and graduate university courses in North America. It reflects Abhayanana's broad ecumenicity, as it encompasses all religious traditions, presenting the teachings of both Eastern and Western spirituality in a scholarly and non-discriminatory manner.

It contains one of the most comprehensive anthologies of the rare gems of mystical thought ever accumulated, while at the same time it presents an enlightened viewpoint which unites the mystics of diverse traditions in one great, undifferentiated, tradition.

Doubtless, this book, if read widely, will help to bring about a new level of understanding among peoples of differing faiths -- that religious experience is the common thread uniting all faiths and the bond uniting all peoples -- that there are not many religions, but one in many garbs.

This easy-to-read book is not only a history and compendium of the rare works of the greatest mystics, but is an ever-new source of inspiration and encouragement to all students of enlightenment -- both novices and seasoned scholars alike.

"... the book 'History of Mysticism' you introduced me to has had a profound and enduring affect on my life." ~ Warren Miller

NB - History of Mysticism (© 1987, 1994, 1996, 2009), by Swami Abhayananda, has recently been republished in a revised edition under the title: The Mystics: God-Realization Through The Ages and can be read online

Swami Abhayananda (pronounced ub-hi-uh-non-duh) was born Stan Trout in1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana. HIs interest in philosophy began in his early teens, and led him to the study of a wide variety of literature on the subject.

In 1966, at the age of twenty-eight, while following that interest into the philosophies of India, he had what might be termed "a spiritual awakening". After this shift of consciousness, he lived as a hermit for some years in a forest cabin, and then went to India to seek spiritual teaching with Swami Muktananda.

Renamed and fully commited, Abhayananda returned to the US to establish ashrams for the teachng of meditation and 'enlightenment'. After ten years, he left Muktananda's organization and again went into retreat, this time in a farmhouse in the New York Catskills, near the University of New York at New Paltz, where he continued his studies, and researched, wrote and published several books, including The Supreme Self and History of Mysticism.

After many fruitful years of spiritual teaching and mentoring, Swami Abhayananda has now settled near Olympia in Washington State. His primary focus, is on the writing and publishing of his books on the universality of religious experience. Further details of his publications can be found on his Web site. Here are just a few expressions of appreciation by readers for his book, History of Mysticism ...

"This delightfully insightful book had a profound and deepening effect upon my experience as a relatively new 'seer'. I highly recommend it to spiritual 'seekers' and 'finders' alike."

- Pete Sumner, Fremantle, Western Australia.

"Thank you for your monumental work, History of Mysticism. It has to be one of the most important books ever written. . . . Thank you for this wonderful book."

- Murray Cohen, Dryden, New York

"I think your book is beautiful. You write with such eloquence. You have a gift for blending ideas that seem paradoxical into words that are clear and straightforward. Thank you for writing your book. It’s been a great help to me as well as a joy to read."

- Cindy A. Roode, Franklin, Pennsylvania

"I read, underlined, spent a lot of time crying tears of unbridled emotion, and often heard myself exclaiming, ‘Oh, THAT’s what it means!’ Whatta book. Without question, it had to be written from Divine Inspiration and assistance. . . . How can I tell you how magnificent your book is? . . . Were I to be stuck on a deserted island, the only book I would need is History Of Mysticism. I am so grateful the Universe put a copy of it in my hands."

- Ann Tomcho, Akron, Michigan
