What Is A Podcast?

Generally speaking, podcasting is a way for people all over the world to hear someone's voice. Voice recordings are turned into audio files and posted on the Net so that they can then be downloaded to your computer. Audio files can be a wonderful vehicle for spiritual teaching.

More particularly, according to Wikipedia, podcasting is a "method of publishing audio broadcasts via the Internet." In layman's terms, it's a way for individuals and groups to create audio programs and allow people to download, listen, and subscribe to them very easily.

If you're familiar with blogging you can think of podcasting as "audio blogging." The ability to subscribe to podcasts via a technology called RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allows you to have fresh content downloaded regularly to your computer or portable MP3 player (e.g., an iPod).

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle Eckhart Tolle, is based in Vancouver, Canada, and has authored several best-selling books on spiritual enlightenment including The Power Of Now and A New Earth.

He points a way out of the conditioned mind that keeps us trapped, helpless, and unhappy. In simple language, he describes a deeper level of consciousness beyond the limited thinking mind, and the way to make it available to you.

He teaches that only by fully accepting this moment in time can you free yourself from the “pain-body” -- the accumulated pain of your past -- and from your fears about the future.

'Sailor' Bob Adamson

'Sailor' Bob Adamson 'Sailor' Bob Adamson was a student ofand received teaching from this sage in India. Bob now resides in Deepdene, Melbourne, and conducts regular gatherings with interested friends in his home to explore these teachings on the non-dual nature of reality.

Bob Adamson is becoming increasingly well-known as an accessible, living teacher of Non-Duality, or Advaita. Bob was on the spiritual path for many years before spending time with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj in India. Nisargadatta pointed Bob towards his own true nature. Bob was able to recognize this and ended a lifetime of seeking.

Bob lives in Deepdene, Melbourne. There are several books available which consist of transcriptions or recordings of meetings which he regularly holds at his home.

Many seekers have traveled around the world to visit Bob. For many of them, due to Bob's persistent clarity and direct pointing to their own true natures, they were able to recognize this also and have no need for further seeking.

Four excerpts from Bob's CDs are available for listening in MP3 format:

  • Excerpt 1: "You can never find an answer to it in the mind..."
  • Excerpt 2: "You never move away from presence. Time is a mental concept."
  • Excerpt 3: "And it's the search itself which stops you from really seeing that."
  • Excerpt 4: "You're not noticing the evident. You're noticing the content."

The Advaita Show

The Advaita Show -- Features visits with Melbourne sage 'Sailor' Bob Adamson, brilliantly hosted by Cameron Reilly. Serious, funny, human, complete, mostly unedited. The Advaita Show brings Aussie humour to a subject prone to mind-games, abstraction and absurdity and gently mocks the pretensions of spiritual elitists.

The show is now produced intermittently, but you can read the blog, from which previous podcasts can be accessed: http://advaita.thepodcastnetwork.com/

Regular Podcast Listening

A growing number of spiritual teachers are now providing regular satsang or spiritual teaching podcasts which you can download manually or automatically. There's no charge for this service, but most welcome donations from those who can afford to support their work.

Good examples of these are John Sherman's Podcasts (from the River Ganga Foundation), and Michael McAlister's Podcasts (from the Infinite Smile Sangha). Please contact us if you know of others you feel we should list here.

Simple Audio File Downloading

Create a special folder on your computer where you can easily store and find your podcast audio files.

Some podcasters only provide a link to the current episode or talk, while others provide an archive of podcast links for you to select from. If you're interested in listening to a particular audio file or podcast without using a podcast program, look for the appropriate link. You can then choose to listen to the audio file with your computer's MP3 player or you can save the podcast to the special folder you've created on your hard drive (see above).

To get a separate player for MP3 files, go to Windows Media Player Downloads and select the version that is appropriate for your computer. Save the file to disc or allow Microsoft to install it for you. If you save the file to disc, double-click on the saved file and follow instructions to install.

To download a podcast with Windows, right-click mouse on link and choose Save Target As.... You can now choose to save the audio file on your computer.

To download a podcast on a Mac Operating System, hold the control button and click on the mouse. A menu will open and you can choose to open with iTunes or Download Linked File As... You can now choose to save the audio file on your computer.

Once your audio file is downloaded, go to your designated folder and select the file you want to hear or transfer to your iPod or other MP3 player.

Using iTunes

One of the easiest ways to listen to podcasts is probably through Apple iTunes. To listen to a podcast through iTunes, first you must have Windows 2000 or XP (or Apple) and iTunes 4.9 or higher installed on your computer. To download the latest version of iTunes (free), Click Here. Then follow the onscreen instructions.

Once you have iTunes installed, go to the site of a spiritual teacher whom you know is an iTunes podcaster and you will see on the podcast page "Subscribe to this: Podcast (iTunes Podcast)". You can see an example Here. Click that link and the podcast will show up in your iTunes browser where you can listen to the podcast episodes streaming, download individual podcasts, or subscribe to the podcast which will allows iTunes to download new episodes of that podast automatically (they'll show up in the "Podcasts" section of iTunes).

A couple of quick notes about iTunes. First, when you sign up for an account you'll be required to enter a credit card number. This is done so that you can easily purchase music and audio books in the future. However, virtually all podcasts are free so your card will not be charged. Second, subscribing to a podcast means that you will automatically get future episodes of that podcast. And unsubscribing and deleting old episodes is also very easy.
