Where Do We Stand?
In its gatherings, Inner Light teaches that 'God' is Spirit and not an object. Spirit, being without qualities and formless, manifests the entire universe of forms.
Inner Light’s 'theology' reflects the deeper teaching of Jesus and could be termed panentheistic ("all in God, God in all"), and goes far beyond mere theism (which can only posit a transcendent "God up there" who sometimes personally intervenes "down here"), and certainly goes far beyond lowly pantheism ("all is God" -- God is not more than the sum of creation).
For Inner Light, God is fully transcendent and fully immanent, entirely beyond all and yet completely within all as the One Who alone IS, pure Spirit, the groundless Ground or Essence of all.
For Inner Light, God is both the transpersonal Godhead or “That beyond anything that can be named,” and the personal Lord, i.e., the Christ-consciousness. Hence, 'Christ' is not a person, but a (Christian) title given to the Light of Consciousness or divine Presence within every sentient being.
Jesus of Nazareth was an outstanding seer, teacher and leader who fully embraced and lived out of his Christ-nature. His mission was to reveal the inner Christ (the kingdom of God) to all who were ready to recognize it.
Inner Light affirms that divine Spirit is the true Identity of every person and that this unborn, undying Nature or Essence is already and always pure, innocent and perfectly one with God.
People suffer and behave badly because they are unconscious of their true nature and are heavily influenced by past conditioning.
The mission of Inner Light is to help all to become fully conscious of What they already and always are. Only when people see or know the truth can they be free from mind-made suffering.
All words, ideas and concepts are merely representations or abstractions -- including those found in the world's scriptures. It's in recognizing that even the greatest ideas about truth are forms appearing and disappearing in formless, present awareness, that actual truth is revealed.
Inner Light views the Bible not as the 'Word of God', but as a ponter to what is real or true. The inner Christ or Light is the living 'Word' (or divine teacher).
Inner Light focuses on the experience of our true nature and on conscious behaviour rather than on any belief system.
Inner Light is not bound by tradition, docrine or litergy, but seeks to celebrate the Life that we are in all its forms.
Inner Light encourages silent meditation and/or prayerfulnes for individuals and in its gatherings.
Inner Light seeks to be an inclusive inter-faith community of friends or seers. Its aim is to develop and deploy better (more conscious and fulfilled) people.
Inner Light is not separatist and encourages the full participation of its members in the wider community and in activities to bring about positive change in the world.
Inner Light is not an organisation and does not as such own property.
Members meet in private homes or rented premises. It is best described
as part of a supportive network or movement.
Inner Light encourages the study and teaching of 'church' history - especially the first 700 years.
Inner Light sees itself as a re-emmergence of fellowships based on the original deeper truth-teaching given by Jesus - the same teaching expressed by true seers in different terms and in other times and 'religious' cultures.
